Mail Day - The Don't You Hate it When This Happens Edition

Yesterday I arrived home to find one of the worst things I can find in my mailbox:

The dreaded Post Office Damaged Mail envelop.  I have received empty envelopes with no cards in these in the past.  I have received parts of cards and mangled cards.  I have learned to always expect the worst.  As I lifted it up I realized that there was some weight to it, so I suspected that there was something still inside.  As I extracted the PWE from the Post Office envelope, here is what I got:

There are some tears on the front and what looks like a team bag and a toploader sticking out.  Not looking great, not looking like a total loss either.  Flip it over and...
The back is looking a little worse for the wear.  Some decent sized rips and what looks like some machinery marks.  I am still a little worried.  When I open it up, what do I see:

It is a team back and as I recall I won two Carson Palmer Relic cards from the same Sportlots seller in some auctions.  This side doesn't look too back, flip it over:
This side shows a dual relic card and also looks pretty good.

I pull them out of the team bag and inspect the cards.  Not only was there no damage to the cards, the toploaders look pretty good as well.  Two nice additions to the USC Football collection and a sigh of relief.  That was a close one.

I might as well finish off my mail day - it was all USC themed.  I picked up two more cards from Sportlots auctions.
First up is a nice 2011 Panini Xtra Points green parallel of WR Steve Smith. It is numbered 18/25.
The final mail day card is of injured and unloved QB Mark Sanchez.  This one is a 2013 National stamped card and is numbered 3/5.

Pretty nice to pick up two low serial numbered cards and of course the two Palmer relics.  Dodged a Post Office bullet this time.

McCovey Monday #40 - 2013 Topps Chasing History Gold Relic 23/99

My favorite player of all time is Hall of Famer Willie McCovey.  I have amassed a collection of over 1100 different  McCovey cards since I started collecting him in the late 1980s.  I will show off one of my favorite cards every Monday.  Stretch was one of the most feared hitters of all time and I am excited to show off my collection.

I just realized I am closing in on 1200 different McCovey cards, I am just a handful away.  Today's card to celebrate the Giants great is a Series 2 Topps Flagship release, check it out:

This card is the Gold Parallel Chasing History relic of Stretch celebrating his 1969 NL MVP award.  If you look in the bottom right you can see a serial number of 23/99.  I was happy to pick this up, it seems like these newer release relics are starting to carry a little bit of a premium.

When relics started appearing in the hobby I preferred a jersey piece over a bat piece but my preferences have changes over the years and I seem to appreciate bat pieces more.  I was glad to see this relic contain a piece of one of the most feared hitters of all times bat.

Group Break - Padrographs - 2012 Topps Heritage High Numbers

This post is a long time coming.  I just ran across these scans and realized I never posted about this group break.  A long time ago, must have been a year or so, Rod over at Padrographs, bought a set of 2012 Topps Heritage Update cards and sold off the team sets.  I really am not a fan of these new sets Topps is only selling through their website and this was a great way to pick up my Giants.  Here are the Giants from the set:

There were only 2 Giants included but both were highly instrumental in the World Series run the Giants made last year.  In fact both earned contract extensions last off season.  I am hoping Pagan can bounce back after an injury plagued year and Marco can be a little more 2012 and a little less 2013 to help get the Giants back in Playoff contention.

In addition to the 2 promised Giants, Rod included this group of Giants as well.  How cool is that. Got some Ginter across the top, some parallels and shiny in the middle and another trio including a Panda mini across the bottom.  I was very happy to see these in the package.

Without doubt, the coolest part of the package was this group of in person autos for the minor league Salem-Keizer Volcanoes - a minor league affiliate of the Giants.  I only recognize a couple of the names but love the addition of these cards to my Giants collection. These cards currently sit in a stack of cards destined to be in my Giants oddball binder once I uncover the box from my move that has my extra binders and pages.

Rod, I know this is about a year too late but if you happen to see this, thanks for the break and the extras!

A Golden Great of the Say Hey Kid

While I really like the two thick insert cards Topps included in Series 1 and Series 2, the set builder in me is quite happy that there weren't similar cards in Update.  I am making some decent progress on my Update insert set after my Jumbo box purchase and a couple small lots of eBay purchases. I should have my want list posted soon.

Topps flagship Series 1 included a set called The Greats.  These were pretty tough pulls and I have been trying to complete this insert set since the product was released. I am still in need of 5 cards:

2013 Topps The Greats #TG5 Ted Williams

2013 Topps The Greats #TG14 Stan Musial

2013 Topps The Greats #TG16 Tom Seaver
2013 Topps The Greats #TG22 Hank Aaron

2013 Topps The Greats #TG26 Derek Jeter

Topps flagship Series 2 included a similar set called The Elite.  These seem to be a little easier (and cheaper) to track down but once again I need a handful to complete my insert set:

2013 Topps The Elite #TE1 Miguel Cabrera
2013 Topps The Elite #TE2 Ryan Braun
2013 Topps The Elite #TE4 Tom Seaver
2013 Topps The Elite #TE5 Sandy Koufax
2013 Topps The Elite #TE15 Willie Mays
2013 Topps The Elite #TE18 Ted Williams

If you happen to have any of these for trade, I am sure I can put together a sweet return trade package.

However my intent of this post was to share this card with you:
This is a gold parallel of a Series 1 Willie Mays The Greats insert.  As you can see it is serial numbered 80/99.  It is super think and I think this is an outstanding design that looks even better in gold than the base silver.  I was able to pick this up at a very reasonable price that was actually cheaper than I can currently find the wants on my The Greats listed above.

A Fairly Big Void in My Giants Collection

I was organizing some cards over the weekend and updating my checklist and recognized something when I placed this card on my 2013 Giants page:

This is a relic card of Tim Lincecum from the 2013 Topps Mini set.  What I recognized is that I don't have any other 2013 Topps Mini cards in my Giants collection.  I seem to recall that there was a group break or two on this product that I missed out on during my tumultuous months in the middle of the year.  One of my goals over the past few years is to try and pick up every base card released for my Giants collection. The past couple years I have gotten close but it appears this year will be quite a challenge.  I thought I would share my 2013 base wants and some other cards I really want in my collection from this year's release in hopes of drumming up some trade action.  While I don't have any Topps Mini cards to trade, I do have plenty of trade bait if you can help out on this list.

McCovey Monday #39 - 1967 Topps Venezuelan

My favorite player of all time is Hall of Famer Willie McCovey.  I have amassed a collection of over 1100 different  McCovey cards since I started collecting him in the late 1980s.  I will show off one of my favorite cards every Monday.  Stretch was one of the most feared hitters of all time and I am excited to show off my collection.

It is very challenging to knock a card from the 60s off my Willie McCovey want list.  The cards I need are pretty rare, and I consider all of them as oddballs.  Some are Topps inserts and test issues, some Bazooka items and a few Topps cards that were produced in Venezuela.  After this new purchase, I am down to 2 League Leader cards of the Venezuelan variety.  Check it out:

I am not a mint condition junkie but I do typically try for cards in as good of condition as possible.  I have learned when it comes to Venezuelan cards, good condition isn't typically available and when it is prices are outside my range.  On the front you can see a stain near his face.  It also appears the card has been trimmed.

While the card fronts are typically the same on Venezuelan issues, the backs are usually quite different as you can see here.  I could probably try and translate this using my 3 years of high school Spanish but I haven't taken the time yet.  You can see the stain from the front coming through.  There is also paper loss.  Many of these Venezuelan issues have paper loss as it appears many were pasted into notebooks.

Despite its flaws, I am very happy to have this in my collection and to knock a card from back in 1967 off my McCovey want list.

A Baseball Card Done Right

Yesterday I received a card in the mail that I picked up off Sportlots auction site. It cost me under a dollar plus a buck or two in shipping. Some might say that I overpaid, even at that price. To me it was a great purchase and this card is one of the most attractive cards (of the non-vintage variety) I have ever laid eyes on.  I will share the front and back of this card and the reasons I enjoy this card.

1. A great photograph, it looks late 50s or very early 60s.  The colors are beautiful and I love the crowd scene in the back.  It appears that Orlando is posing for a picture but for someone else and for some reason that appeals to me.
2. The area surrounding the picture is nice and shiny, it really pops in person.
3. The gold foil for the Tribute logo, the team name, player name and number looks fabulous.
4. I love that it highlights his uniform number, the brand is called "Tribute" and this is all about a tribute to his uniform number.
5. Only includes his last name, if we are paying tribute to a famous ball player, should we really need his first name.

6. Moving to the back, we get clarity that the tribute surrounds his uniform retirement and it even includes the year.
7. Another picture on the back and it is a different one - always a plus.
8. I like how the stats are broken out, we get his Giants status and the overall career stats.
9. The back has a nice write up that includes a few different facts.  Very informational.
10. The card stock is great.  It is solid and a little thicker than a typical card but not as thick as today's Tribute cards.

10 great reasons that this card is great.  My only small complaint would be the lengthy copyright info on the right side of the back but that is just being nit-picky.  I have a McCovey from this set but haven't taken a look at it for a while.  There are also cards of Mays, Marichal, Ot and Hubbell in this set and I am going to have to go after then.  If they are anywhere close to as nice as this card, they will be great additions to my collection.

Trade Post - GCRL

One of my favorite past times is taking Giants from unwanting Dodger fans and lucky for me there are quite a few Dodger bloggers out there happy to send the boys in Orange my way.  I am trying to catch up on trades made prior to my move and it just so happens I had two trades from GCRL, the Dodger blog that celebrates the Dodgers famous infield from years gone by.

Here are the cards from Trade #1

Nice group here, a no-hitter celebration, an orange refractor parallel (the Giants look so nice in orange borders) and a couple cards of the Say Hey Kid.  I love the sliding into home card.
Another nice grouping here.  We have a Wendell Kim sighting - he was the Giants 3rd base coach for a while and I just remember him as being terrible.  Another great Kirt Manwaring card.  An insert of Former Giants pitcher Barry Zito (I thought I would never be able to say that!) and some parallels.
Probably the coolest cards in the package, these two triple fold reprint cards featuring Giants from early in the 20th century.  This Mathewson card reminds me I have a book about him to read, need to move it towards the top of the reading list.
Finally, trade #1 finishes off with some vintage Giants upgrades.

Here are some more Giants goodies from Trade #2

Oh wait, it wasn't all Giants - I scored a sweet Vida in an Oakland A's uniform.  The beard card made me happy when I got it, now it makes me sad :-(

Some sweet Giants stickers were include as well.  I just got the final puzzle sticker, look for a future post celebrating the set completion.

Finally the best card of trade #2 is this awesome Buster Posey Heritage refractor.  A very sweet card of the reigning MVP (for the next couple weeks).

A belated thanks Jim for the great trades, I am always here to help rid you of your Giants!

Trade Post - Sportscards from the Dollar Store

Prior to my move, Douglas from Sportscards from the Dollar Store contacted me to let me know that he had found a 1991 OPC set for me at a card show!  How cool is it when fellow collectors are on the hunt for things you need for your collection.

In addition to the OPC cards, I also got a little set help from last year's Archives:

I still need a ton of the retail In Action and Combo cards but would still love to get them all.  The 1982 Topps set is a set that I have an attachment to for some reason.  For some odd reason I didn't collect too many cards that year and had to work diligently during the late 80s to finish it off.  The In Action cards are obviously from a design in that set hence the reason I want to finish that one off.  I recently picked up an extra McCovey reprint but still need 2 more of those to finish off that insert set.  So close...

Prior to this trade I didn't have one card from this classic set, fairly simple design but it works for me in that early 90s kind of way.
Some more random Giants needs.  I recall the Giants picking up Dave Anderson and being ticked that we had a former Dodger on the team.  He had a decent year in a part time role his first year with the Giants then stunk it up the second year so we sent him back to LA.

The fronts of 1991 OPC are exactly the same so for some reason I scanned and uploaded all the backs.  Nothing more exciting than a bunch of boring cards backs - sorry about that.
I did scan the fronts of 4 cards.  This is one of my favorite parts of OPC.  They give you the picture in the old uniform and in these cases even showcase the old team name but in nice small print they say "Now with Giants" and the date of acquisition - very cool!

Douglas, thank you so much for thinking of me and for making the trade. Sorry it took months to post it but please don't take that as a sign that the trade wasn't appreciated.  It isn't every day that you can knock off an entire team set in one trade - Thanks!!!

I Will Admit, It Kind of Hurts

My move took me from Angels country to right in the heart of Dodgers country.  Obviously as a Giants fan it is a challenge hearing all the Dodger news and seeing all the Dodger gear with the season they are having.  With the exception of some bloggers I have met and a few hard core fans, fans in LA tend to be of the fair weather variety - this includes fans of my beloved USC Trojans as well.  This irritates me as well.

However, in what is kind of a surprise to me, seeing Brian Wilson in that 00 Dodgers uniform and pitching well really has thrown me for a loop.  It just seems wrong as I have so many fond Giants memories.  I remember him closing out the 2010 World Series, I was able to attend the All Star game when he came out in bright orange shoes and I remember his signature beard growing longer and bushier and more out of control.

I picked up this card shortly before he signed with the Dodgers:
This is a pretty cool card - the gold version numbered to 99.  We have his beard showcased, although it is about half as grand as it is today.  He is in his signature post-save pose and of course is in his Giants grays.

I am certain that I won't be going after any of his Dodgers cards and for right now I don't think I will be seeking out any older Giants cards for the time being.  I still need some more time to get over it.

Happy Housewarming to Me

As most of you know, I moved this summer.  It wasn't a long move - about 90 miles from South Orange County, CA to South Ventura County, CA - but it was a move. It involved selling a house, buying a house, moving all our stuff (although my company picked up the tab for the moving truck and packing), a new job for me, my kids changing schools, my wife leaving her job of 12 years and being too far away from our friends to stop by and say hi.  Despite all the turmoil we are settling in quite nice and enjoying our new home and lifestyle.

I have shared some of the trials and tribulations about the move on this blog and here is some more evidence, if you actually need it, that our hobby and blogging community is filled with wonderful and generous collectors.

Three different bloggers have sent me cards with nice notes wishing me well in our new house - how cool is that.  I thought I would share all of them together in this post.

First up a PWE from Mark at This Way to the Clubhouse...:

A pair of great card with an Archive All Star insert of Rickey Henderson and a cool First Day Parallel of Dave Martinez.  A little old, a little new and a nice note to boot.  Thanks Mark, I really appreciate it!

Next up was a package from Spiegel, the author of Dodgers themed blog Nomo's Sushi Platter.  Check out all these goodies:

The top line features some mini 2000's cards of legendary Giants, very cool!  Also scored a trio of Giants infielders.  The Will Clark USA card is my first of his from that set.  I remember being bummed out when he wasn't included in the 1985 subset in the Topps release. I don't recall a story on why he wasn't included but if I recall he was one of the team captains.  The Aurilia is a nice thick parallel and my first of that type - it features a somewhat odd photo to include on a card.
Scored some 2013 cards as well, I suspect I am a regular recipient of many Dodgers collectors extra Giants and I have no problem with that.

Finally a few more Giants to round out the package.  The two Highlights cards make me a little sad that my team isn't in the playoffs this year.  The two cards from the final UD release make me yearn a little for their base card releases.  As a set collector, I enjoyed it a lot more when there was more than one company producing a licensed base set.

Thanks Spiegel for the package and well wishes.  I am hoping you get back in the swing of things in posting, I always enjoy your stuff.  I totally relate to how that becomes a challenge at times though.  Maybe we will run into each other at the LCS one of these days.

My final package came from frequent trade partner, Greg, of the legendary Night Owl blog.

First up a nice collection of 2013 cards.  I needed some help on my Series 2 base set and got it in this package.  Also got a couple nice minis from this year's Ginter including a very nice black border Scutaro.  Finally a non-Giant with a Gold holofoil Rickey Henderson insert, a very nice addition to the Rickey collection.
Some more Giants from Greg's seemingly endless supply of Giants.  I tend to rarely pull Giants when I buy packs and NO has the opposite problem which works out great for me.

Also got some set help for Series 2 and Opening Day which are both nearing completion.  Over the past couple weeks I have made a few purchases to try and wrap up some of these sets.

Speaking of set help, Greg sent me a very nice conditioned card of HOFer Johnny Bench for my 1973 Topps set.  This is one of my favorite cards of the set and I am so happy to have it now.  I have a 2013 collecting goal of finishing this set up to card #528.  With this addition I am within striking distance only needed 6 cards to finish it up.  Might be time to seek out those last few cards then tackle the rest of the set in 2014.

Thanks Greg for the package of cards, it is greatly appreciated.  The generosity of our blogging community continues to amaze me.

A Big Oddball Purchase

I little while back I was surfing eBay and ran across a Rickey Henderson card that I had been searching for for years, probably back to the late 80s when I started collecting him.  As I tend to do I looked to see if the seller had combined shipping and when I saw that he did, I did a little search.  Lucky for me he had the team name listed in the title - there is nothing better for a team collector.

I went a little wild, he had so many different oddballs that I wanted that I had a hard time stopping.  I ended up with over 30 cards that I thought I would share.

These are super cool and actually cards I had never seen before.  I had bought and traded for some that were similar but not these that have the red border and big bubbled card number in the upper right corner.  One great thing about my team having such a long and illustrious history is that quite a few Great Feats have occurred throughout their history.

I am a HUGE fan of the small box sets put out by Fleer in the late 80s/early 90s.  I actually thought I had most of these and was surprised how many I found on this spending spree.  I will continue to keep my eyes open and suspect there may be a 2014 collecting goal surrounding these issues if my sets aren't complete by year end.

This is a random assortment.  The Mitchell and Williams HR Derby cards were some I had never seen.  The Swell set Mays wasn't on my team checklist even though I had other cards from the set on it, kind of odd.  I always like to score cards that aren't on my checklist.  Poor Mike Krukow, he sure isn't photogenic, this picture on the BK card and the one above are not very flattering.  I couldn't believe I didn't have the Jack Clark Kelloggs in my collection and glad I was able to pick it up.

This trio comes from more recent releases with 2 blue parallels from 2012 Panini Cooperstown and a red refractor of 2007 Topps Chrome.  The red doesn't look too great for the Giants but suspect would look spectacular with a team like the Reds.
Here is a group of Topps cards from some random sets.  The Mel Ott photos is classic, amazing he hit over 500 HRs with that high leg kick. Both the Mays and Robby Thompson are cards I would have sworn I already had but they weren't on my checklist or in the Giants binder.  The Monte Irvin All Time Fan Favorites was one of the last cards I needed to complete one of my 2013 collecting goals.
And the card that started it all, a 1983 Permagraphics Super Star of Rickey Henderson.  I had the gold parallel of this card but had not been able to find a reasonably priced one for my collection in over 20 years of searching.  I was one of the oldest Rickey's I needed and I was happy to scoop it up.

I haven't gone back to do any searches from this seller but do have him bookmarked as a favorite.  I am a little scared because I tend to lack some self control when it comes to non-standard issue cards.  Maybe next month I will try to set aside some of the budget to see what else I can find.
