The first year I started collecting was 1979:
My favorite set is challenging as there are so many I like - 1963, 1965, 1972, 1975, 1983 and I could do on but for nostalgic reasons I have to say my favorite set is 1959 Topps.
When I was about 8-9 years old on a visit to my grandparents house my dad pulled out a box that had all his old baseball cards and they were mostly from 1959 and 1960. Both sets were relatively close to complete and I was able to complete them at card shows throughout the 1980s. I enjoy the design, the colors and the memories it brings back of wandering around card shows with my buddy trying to track down affordable copies of those last few cards I needed.

With baseball season being over, a lot of the attention of sports fans shifts to other sports. We are in the sweet spot right now where the NFL, NBA, College Football, College Basketball and Hockey (when it is actually playing a season) are all in gear. Most of us have made our favorite baseball teams well known in the blogging community. This week's question is:
Outside of your favorite baseball team, what is your favorite team in another sport, college or pro?
Feel free to share some insight into why, if there is a why as well.Same thing goes for a winner, random 3 times and will close the contest out a day or so ahead of announcing the winner.
Sadly, I only have room in my heart for one sport. It's all baseball all the way. No other favorite teams.
ReplyDeleteIt's a close call for my non-baseball favorite team. I'm a four-sport fan, and I live and die with the Boston Celtics and Buffalo Bills (and NY Rangers to a lesser extent).
ReplyDeleteBut, if I'm pressed to choose, I'll go with my football team. They were my second love affair -- after I discovered baseball and the Mets. And Sunday's are a spiritual experience. I know, I know, the team has been 'bad' for over a decade now. But, I grew up with the Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith teams, and that made such an impression on me that my fandom will never be tainted. I loved those teams, and as a result, I love the franchise for better or worse.
That being said, Go Bills! Please beat the Dolphins tonight. PLEASE!!!
I'm not really that big into any sports outside baseball, but I'd say the Chicago Bears if I had to choose.
ReplyDeleteThe Rams are my second favorite team. The Blues used to be competitive for that honor, but when the Rams won a Superbowl during my Senior year of high school, the fun of it all cement them at #2. Even though the Cardinals hadn't won a World Series since I was a baby at that point, they were, and are, still #1.

ReplyDeleteMichael Waltrip Racing. I started rooting for Mikey after meeting him in person at one of my local Chevy dealers back when he first formed his team, and before he switched to Toyota. He's a hell of a nice guy and makes me feel like he genuinely appreciates his fan base.
ReplyDeleteHmmm close between Football and Hockey in Football it is a very close tie with the Redskins and Rams or RamSkins as I like to call my collection. In Hockey it is the Capitals (Hopefully there will be Hockey again sometime). For the sake of the contest I'm going with the Redskins.
ReplyDeleteThe Bills are a distant, distant, distant second to the Dodgers. You can't live in Buffalo and not be a Bills fan (or else you won't be able to talk to anyone!). I was indifferent until I moved there. When I left (and had covered the team), I was a definite fan.
ReplyDeleteI agree with night owl.I am in Rochester ( just east of Buff ) and the fans here talk like the yankee fans do only without the success.
ReplyDeleteI am a Dolphins fan.Have pictures of me in front of the christmas tree as a 4 year old withe the teal and orange pj's.Not sure how or why it stuck but I'm glad it did.My son has been turned into a Bills fan so sundays around here can get pretty rough..

DeleteThe Anaheim Ducks, as I absolutely love hockey. Hockey playoffs are the best thing on tv sports-wise. I became a Ducks' fan in the late 90s, as they were far more exciting than the Kings.

ReplyDeleteI became a fan of the Oregon Ducks as a kid because they used a verison of Donald Duck in their logo. I've been a fan ever since. Maybe not of all the jerseys but a fan nonetheless. Oh, and because I'm an alum, I have to say Tennessee. Go Vols, get Gruden! Ha ha! Yeah, right.
ReplyDeleteChicago Bears if I'm limited to college or professional sports. If we're looking at a broader spectrum then I would say local high school basketball.
ReplyDeleteLa kings (since the days of the triple crown line). Not so much anymore - the nhl lost me when they cancelled the season a few years ago. I've been an original season ticket holder for the ducks and the wild but I will never go to another nhl game. All that said, i was happy that the kings won the cup last year.
ReplyDeleteThe Auburn Tigers, 2-8 record aside! Seriously though, I think football in Alabama is a incomprehensible pastime to anyone who doesn't live here (which is most people). The passion for Auburn, and that other team from out west, is mad.
ReplyDeleteI got hooked on AU after the 2007 Vandy game. My family is an Auburn family-most folks have gotten degrees there, and certainly no one has from the state school. Went to the Texas A&M game with a family member to see Johnny Manziel run all over us, and saw that the stadium, 1-6 record notwithstanding, was almost sold out, with just a few upper deck seats left. It's crazier when we're not awful though. Just google Paul Finebaum show and you'll get a pretty good idear of the Auburn-Alabama rivalry.

ReplyDeleteNo need to enter me into next week's contest since I've already won, but my second favorite team is the New York Knicks. As a kid, my mom always thought football was too violent for me to watch, so besides baseball, I'd watch basketball. Although my love for the New York Giants is strong today, I've been a Knicks fan for longer and have great memories of them from the 90's.
