McCovey Monday - #35 2002 Fleer Fall Classics 24k Gold 1/1

My favorite player of all time is Hall of Famer Willie McCovey.  I have amassed a collection of over 1100 different  McCovey cards since I started collecting him in the late 1980s.  I will show off one of my favorite cards every Monday.  Stretch was one of the most feared hitters of all time and I am excited to show off my collection.

I haven't really found too much in the way of new McCovey cards to chase after recently.  Seems like most of what I don't have is quite pricey and I am more focused on my vintage Giants and completing some sets to dish out serious cash on a new McCovey relic or auto.  I still scan eBay occasionally to look for a deal or pass the time and a week or two back I decided to take a flier on this card.  I put in a $2 bid and ended up with this card for $1.04 plus $1.99 shipping:

This is a 2002 Fleer Fall Classics card where some guy slapped some gold foil on the front, enclosed the card and a COA in a penny sleeve and top loader then stuck a gold sticker on it to seal it up.  See it is very official and even has this nice long explanation.
I am really not sure why I bought this, I guess I can add another card to my McCovey checklist as this is a "different" card that the base card I already have.  I do have to admit the card itself is very nice looking and the foil placement doesn't detract too much. My big dilemma now is how to store this.  I have a majority of my McCovey cards in a binder and this won't fit.  I can't bear the thought of peeling off the official sticker so I guess it has to go in the box with the few cards too thick to fit in binder pages.  At least I only spend 3 bucks on it.

In other news, today was opening day and my Giants didn't have the best showing.  I am a half full guy so here is my perspective (after being ticked off for a few hours) - Kershaw always kills us so we were probably bound to lose any way, Cain looked very good, Panda had a couple hits so he can't be that injured and I got to watch the game.  I don't get to see too many Giants games in Angels/Dodgers-land so any chance I get to watch the good guys in Orange and Black it is a bonus.  One thing I love about baseball is that there are 162 games so it is easy to set one loss aside and focus on tomorrow.  Go Bumgarner and Go Giants!

Happy Opening Day!!!

  1. Interesting find @ a reasonable price. If the guy has a Gwynn, I'd pick it up for my PC.

  2. Always great to see McCovey cards. Met him years ago 1989 when he could still walk around the stadium. I was there during the Cubs/Giants playoffs. He had been chased for autographs - he said no more. I said fine - I would be honored to shake hands - he got this big grin on his face and stuck out his big paw to shake.
