My favorite player of all time is Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. I
have amassed a collection of over 1300 different McCovey cards since I
started collecting him in the late 1980s. I will show off one of my
favorite cards every Monday. Stretch was one of the most feared hitters
of all time and I am excited to show off my collection.
For the second time in recent weeks I was able to add another 1/1 to my Willie McCovey player collection, this time from 2008 SP Legendary Cuts. It is a pretty nice looking card, check it out:
This card highlights a pretty amazing double header performance my McCovey where he hit 3-run homers in both games of a doubleheader. I miss doubleheaders, my dad and I used to go to an annual Giants/Dodgers doubleheader in SF each year when they were regularly scheduled. In fact, the last time I saw McCovey play was during a doubleheaders in his final season.
This card to me has some pluses and minuses. On the positive, it is a pretty solid design. I like the color portrait in the foreground and the black and white action photo in the back. The Memorable Moment is recessed in a small cut out area. Perhaps my favorite element is his nickname, Stretch, being prominently displayed under his portrait. On the negative, this is somewhat of an artificial 1/1 in my opinion. There are quite a few of these out there where just the Memorable Moment cut out is swapped for a different career highlight.
This is my first of these to make it into my collection. I will keep my eyes open for more but at this point it has been crossed off my want list. I am pretty excited to have added 2 new 1/1s over the last few weeks.
I picked up the Red Baron #1/1 Memorable Moments from this set, I don't know why but I really like the look of the cards.
