RIP Monte Irvin

Yesterday I heard the sad news that Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin passed away at the age of 96.  Irvin was a star player in the Negro Leagues and joined the NY Giants in 1949 at the age of 30.  He had a couple good years for the Giants and stayed involved in baseball throughout his life.  His selection to the HOF occurred in 1973 and I have really enjoy adding cards featuring Irvin to my Giants collection.

I thought as a small tribute to Mr. Irvin, I would share this set that was put out by Front Row in 1992:

I believe this was one of the first certified autographed cards released and as you can see my set came with two COAs.  I added this to my collection a while back and hadn't taken the opportunity to share it.

Baseball lost a legend this week, RIP Mr. Irvin.

  1. That's a great 'off the beaten path' set. I had no idea it existed, thanks for sharing.

  2. Front Row did some great little sets. Monte Irvin contributed much to baseball history. He lived through all the major changes in the game. I've been trying to win his auto for months, always outbid even at full BV. Great tribute!
