Contest Time - Win some HOF Vintage

I have decided to hold my first contest in celebration of the progress this blog and to recognize those that have been following and commenting on it.  I have posted 30 posts since Opening Day (4/6), not quite one per day but close enough for me based on all the traveling I have been doing for work.  I expect the travel to slow down some and hopefully I will hit a nice stride and start a couple new regular features.  My 30 posts have generated 42 followers (more than I ever expected) and closing in on 900 page views.  Let's see if I can increase those with a contest.

Pretty simple contest.  If you haven't figured it out by now, I am a huge Giants fan.  We are struggling this year with some sub par play by a couple of key people (Lincecum and Crawford - although I didn't expect much from Crawford) and more damaging some key injuries (Wilson, Sanchez and Sandoval).  So to lift my spirits, I need some Giants love - not too over the top but some Giants love.

To qualify for the contest, you need to be a follower of my blog - don't worry you still have time.  Other than that, you need to leave a comment on this post telling me who your favorite Giant is, past or present, and why.  If you pimp my contest in your blog and share a link, I will give you two entries into the contest.  I will random the entries on random.org 6 times (number of Giants' championships in their history) and winner will receive these vintage 1970's HOF cards.

The Yount is a little rough and none of them are mint but who needs mint vintage!?  Plus they are free.

I will also toss in a couple other HOF cards of a newer vintage - a Rickey Henderson GU and a Manufactured Hat Logo of one time Giant Orlando Cepeda.

I am heading out of town today to help out my dad - he is having a procedure on his heart - shouldn't be a big deal but it is his heart so it is a little scary. Once I return I will end the contest and we can figure out a winner.

Good luck and thanks for you interest in this blog!

  7. Found out about this contest from Rosenot's Condition Sensitive blog pimped post. I'm not much of a Giant's lover especially since Mr. Bond's *cough*record breaking*cough* HR against my Nats in 07. As a kid I was a Senators fan shortly before they left to become the Rangers in the early 70s. After that I didn't really follow baseball much except the Orioles off and on then really got back into baseball around 2003/04 then the Expos moved to become the Nationals and I've been following them since the Inaugural '05 season.

Oh my fave Giant? How about some love for The Say Hey Kid Willie Mays?

I've got some pimping of my own I guess, I too am currently having my own "first" contest over at my blog "CaptKirk42's Trading Cards blog" http://captkirk42.blogspot.com - "Random Act of Cardness Contest number 1" http://captkirk42.blogspot.com/2012/05/random-act-of-cardness-contest-number-1.html

  8. man, i am such a mets fan - but if you follow my blog (haha, see what i did there?!?) you will notice that the gods are pulling me over to the Giants, with all the Giants relics i seem to pull!

i could go Lincecum. y'know, i'm going to go back a little farther. i played second base when i was younger, so let's go Robby Thompson...

  9. Favorite Giant-I'm going to go current Roster on you: 2011 Venezuelan Winter League MVP Gregor Blanco. If my Braves could have any former player back that we've traded away, I'd be happy to have Gregor back.

    Following; have pimped:

  10. I could be the cool guy and say Willie McCovey, but that was way before my time and as a kid who got into baseball in the mid 80's I'm going to go with a guy I liked back then and that would be Will "the Thrill" Clark.

  11. Tim Lincecum, without a doubt. Love the long hair and that he has one of the better nicknames in an era devoid of good monikers with "The Freak".

    Thanks for the contest!

  12. Lincecum. Always enjoy watching him pitch. Filthy, filthy stuff.

Hope your dad's procedure goes smoothly.

  13. Matt Cain - I don't live anywhere near SF but I was lucky enough to score World Series tickets and made it to Game 2. The excitement of the city and the torture of following all the games made me love the team. Since then I have been a fan and been picking up quite a few Cain/Sandoval cards.

  14. Ummmmm....I don't think I can pick a favorite Giant. Maybe I will just pimp your contest for one entry. Congrats on your blog process. As much as I hate to admit it, the blog world was lacking Giant representation. You filled that void.

  15. Tough choice on favorite Giant.....WIll Clark is up there for me. He was the first Giants star that I came to know as a young collector, so I will go with the Thrill in lieu of more epic choices like the Willies, et al.

Complete pimpage from Ryan's Pitch can be found here: http://ryanspitch.blogspot.com/2012/05/arpsmith-contest-celebration.html

Congratulations on the great start to a great blog!!

  16. best of health to your pops...

as for my favourite Giant..... I'll go with The Count of (John) Montefusco.

    thanks!

  17. Will the Thrill because of his sweeeet swing.....

    ReplyDelete
  18. For me it's got to be Willie Mays. He could do it all!

Congrats on your blog and best wishes go out to your dad!

  19. It has been fun watching the blog develop - keep up the good work.

Favorite Giant - Although it was brief, Joe Morgan.

  20. As an Oakland Athletics fan who has been surrounded by San Francisco Giants fans my whole life, it's no easy task to pick a favorite. But I must admit, that I enjoyed watching Will Clark play at Candlestick. The guy was one helluva hitter and is a local legend.

  21. geez - EVERYBODY has already chosen will clark. he probably is my favorite giant over all because i remember growing up and absolutely hating to see him come up to bat when they played the Dodgers. he wore the super cool eye black and backed that shit up ! he was a great player.
but a lot of folks picked him, so im gonna go with the guy that earned my respect when he came over from the dark side and played for us - jeff kent. he was a bad ass who gave 110% every game. go, jeff kent ! (pimping to follow when i get home)

  23. Not part of the contest, but felt the need to respond. Tito Fuentes is my favorite. For the headbands and for the fact that his 1972 in action card shows him getting wiped out on the front end of a double play.

  24. This is a no-brainer for me. Will Clark is my favorite player, Mississippi State, Giants, Rangers, Cardinals, Orioles, Retirement Softball League. Whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've got to go with Willie Mays. Thanks for the contest.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm going to go with Pat Burrell...but only because he was a long-time Phillie.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jim Ray Hart. Saw a lot of the Giants at Shea as a kid because my best friend's family were Giant fanatics. I thought his name was cool and he always seemed to be either hitting a line drive or having a grounder clanking off his glove at third. My kind of guy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Zito at the moment...I'm sure I'm the only one :P

  29. I'll say Will Clark despite the sometimes bitter rivalry with the Cardinals of the late 80s, because of the leadership he brought to us at the end of his career.

    Also, I've promoted here:

  30. Will Clark, he always KILLED against the Astros... I like the way he played the game and dreaded seeing him walk up to the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well this is a bit like asking for my favorite method of execution, but I'll pick someone anyway.

One of my favorite early pitchers was always Christy Mathewson, so I'll go with him.
